FAQS
Good questions
Everything people usually want to know before commissioning a portrait. If yours is not here, just ask.
How do I commission a portrait?
Get in touch through the contact page with a bit about your animal and the photo you have. I will talk you through sizes and the next steps, and take a deposit to hold your place.
What photo do you need?
The clearest, sharpest photo you have, ideally one where you can see the light in the eyes. The likeness lives in the reference image, so the better the photo, the better the portrait. For the largest A0 size, a very high-resolution image is required.
Can you paint a pet that has passed?
Yes, and I do often. Many of my portraits are memorials. If you only have one imperfect photo, that is enough. I will work with you, gently.
How long does it take?
It depends on the size, the detail, and how busy I am. I will give you a realistic timeframe when you book, and keep you updated the whole way through. Good portraits are not rushed.
How much does it cost?
A4 portraits start at $950, A3 at $1,350, and the museum-scale A1 is by application. Every portrait includes the full process, the colour card, and tracked delivery within New Zealand. See the pricing page for the detail.
Can you include more than one pet?
Yes, at any size. Each additional pet adds to the price, as the faces are where the work is. Tell me who you would like included and I will quote it.
Do you charge extra for low-quality photos?
Sometimes. If the photo is low resolution, I often have to research the breed and find extra references to fill the gaps, which takes more time, so a small surcharge may apply. A good photo avoids this.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Delivery is tracked and insured, and free within New Zealand. For overseas orders, shipping is quoted separately and any import duties are the customer's responsibility.
What will it arrive like?
Beautifully. Your portrait comes gift-wrapped and wax-sealed, packed to arrive safely, with a colour card of the shades I mixed for your animal and a few small personal touches. It is made to be a keepsake from the moment it lands.
Do you paint animals other than dogs and cats?
I am now taking horse commissions, and I am always happy to hear about other animals. Ask, and I will let you know.
