Remembering a very special girl
Macie was not only her families goofy and adorable lab, she was also a globally celebrated hero.
At just 18 months old, Macie was called upon to save the life of a cat named Rory.
Rory had eaten rat poison and was fading fast. He was in desperate need of a blood transfusion. While his family and vets rushed to try and find a matching donor for Rory, his vet stumbled across a little-know last resort... In speaking with the animal blood bank, she learned that in the absence of an appropriate donor, a cat can often receive a SINGLE blood donation from a dog, without dying. Any subsequent blood donations would, however, surely kill the cat.
With no other option, Rorys owners and the vet decided to take the leap. They called upon Macie to donate 120ml of blood to the tiny, fading, Rory. This 120ml of liquid gold, bought Rory enough time for his body to naturally process the poison - ultimately saving his life.
A world famous dog
News articles sprung up across the globe, applauding the amazing outcome. Macie and Rory became famous as one of the very few successful cases of such a donation.
Even after such an ordeal, while trying to capture press photos for a NZHerald article, Macie's mum laughs that the two (Rory and Macie) were still going at each other like cat and dog.
